The
Aluminum Industry in China
Production of aluminum in China has grown exponentially in
recent years. In 2003, 5.4 million tones of aluminum were
produced by China¨s 133 primary aluminum production enterprises.
In 2004, the figure has grown to 6.67 million tones. This
figure is expected to grow to 10 million tones by 2010, a
growth of 46%. The following chart outlines the growth of

Meanwhile, the export of processed aluminum
reached another peak, with export of 431 thousand tones compared
to 611 thousand tones of import; results in an import and export
deficit of 180 thousand tones imported. The deficit was reduced
from 258 thousand tones from last year, a 30% reduction.
Aluminum processing industry is going through reconstruction
period in China. Massive investment goes to updating old technology
and equipment. It is reported from government that 4.39 million
tones of processed aluminum were produced in China in 2004,
a growth of 21% compared to last year.
At the end of the supply chain, consumption of primary aluminum
in China has also shown massive growth, averaging 14% per annum
between 1998 and 2002. 3.6 million tones was used in 2001, growing
to 5 million tones in 2003 and 5.96 million tones in 2004. This
means China has become the second largest global aluminum consumption
market, trailing only America.
