The market for aluminium foil has expanded to a total of USD 38.55 billion in 2024 and will continue to grow at a CAGR of 5.05 per cent till 2030. This is largely due to capital investments made by major manufacturers in their production capacity and the expanding applications of aluminium foil in various sectors such as packaging, construction, energy, electrical products, and electric cars.
The major aluminium foil producing companies are:
Assan Aluminum, Turkey
Assan Alüminyum, a subsidiary of Kibar Holding, has been a leading producer of flat-rolled aluminium products since 1988. Its outputs cater to the packaging, distribution, construction, consumer durables, automotive, as well as HVAC sectors. According to its Sustainability Report in 2024, its total aluminium foil producing capacity amounts to 130 thousand tonnes, in addition to its total flat-rolled sheet & foil producing capacity of 360 thousand tonnes.
The facilities are divided into two integrated units in Turkey. The Tuzla plant in Istanbul serves as the business operations headquarters, featuring the principal cast house and rolling mills for foils, coils, and sheets. The plant also includes coils and foils. The Dilovasi plant serves as a satellite for additional rolling, semi-melting, and semi-fabrication. The two units form a business that has a significant level of exports, currently comprising around 76 per cent of their total distribution. Both plants are ASI-certified, providing industrial foil and sheet grades.
ASAS Alüminyum, Turkey
ASAS Alüminyum has recently accelerated its international growth with the acquisition of Eurofoil in France, marking a significant step in its European expansion strategy. Prior to the purchase, ASAS had an operational capacity of approximately 60,000 tonnes. The aggregate capacity is now doubled at 1.2 million tonnes.
The flat-rolled aluminium business of the group is historically based in Sakarya–Karapürçek, originally set up in 2014 as the demand for superior quality aluminium products grew both domestically as well as internationally. The total area of the plant is 310,000 square meters, of which 135,000 is enclosed, and an annual production of 120,000 tonnes of flat-rolled products, of which 45,000 tonnes are coated products.
Xiamen Xiashun Aluminium Foil Company, China
Xiamen Xiashun Aluminium Foil Company Limited was established in 1988 and is headquartered in Xiamen, which is among China’s main port cities. This company has developed over time into an integrated manufacturing operation involving three plants: the Huli Aluminium Foil Plant, the Haicang Aluminium Foil Plant, and the Haicang Aluminium Sheet Plant. With the three plants combined, the group has an output capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of aluminium foils and 2.2 million tonnes of aluminium sheets every year.
It also has expansion plans for 2025 and 2026. The firm is investmenting into thin foil for battery use, as well as superior packaging, automation, and sustainability, which includes obtaining ASI certification. The expansion will help in EV industry and electronics industry in China, a market that maintains Xiashun as a major exporter.
RUSAL, Russia
RUSAL continues to be among the biggest producers of aluminium foil in the market, given the kind of products it manufactures the foil for. They produce foil through their different rolling mills, which produce foil ranging from 5 to 240 microns thick. The company has manufactured more than 1.1 million tonnes of aluminium foil, which indicates the dominance of the company in the market.
Reynolds, Unites States
Reynolds boasts one of the longest histories in aluminium foil production. Founded in 1919, Reynolds started aluminium foil production for packaging purposes in 1926. As of today, Reynolds functions with an aluminium foil production capability of 1.1 million tonnes.
Chalco, China
Aluminium Corporation of China Limited, also known as Chalco, was established in the year 2021 and is a leading player in the non-ferrous metals industry in China. Its wholly owned subsidiary, Chalco Aluminium Foil, operational since 2015, has two production plants in Longxi and Chongqing, with a cumulative foil production capacity of over 1 million tonnes per annum.
UACJ Foil, Japan
The Japanese foil industry is also undergoing integration. In 2022, an agreement was made for the merger of the businesses of Toyo Aluminium and UACJ Foil and for the elevation of their merged entity as an independent whole company, and this is still an ongoing procedure. Toyo Aluminium has its origins in April 1931, when it was established as Aluminium Sumitomo Ltd. It now manufactures foil that can be used for food, pharmaceutical, electrical, industrial, and construction purposes through its brands named Toyal-Carbo, Toyal-Lotus, Toyal-Pass, Ranefol, and Toyal-Dry. Its annual production capacity is 60,000 tons.
UACJ Foil itself was established in January 2014 through the merger of Nippon Foil Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and Sumikei Aluminium Foil Co., Ltd. and now manages the foil business for the broader UACJ Group. Under their mid-term plan, the company announced expenditures for a high-precision battery foil rolling mill and related capital expenditures to increase the output of lithium battery foils in FY2025 and expenditures in FY2025 to FY2026 to focus on higher-margin products like automotive sheets and battery materials rather than commodity foils used for packaging.
Other aluminium foil and flat-rolled products manufacturers
Gränges, based in Sweden, leads in aluminium rolled products designed for use in heat exchangers and other specialty sectors. Its European entity has three facilities, with flat rolled production in Finspång, in Sweden, and in Konin, in Poland. Its cumulative capacity in Europe amounts to 260,000 tons per year, consisting of 120,000 tons in Finspång and 140,000 tons in Konin, catering to the whole of Europe and the Americas.
Mingtai Aluminium was founded in 1997 in China’s Henan Province and is a large-scale enterprise that produces aluminum sheets, strips, and foil products. Currently, its annual production capacity is 1.4 million tonnes.
Taken together, these producers illustrate how aluminium foil has evolved into a strategic material rather than a simple packaging input, with capacity expansions, consolidation and technology upgrades shaping a market that is increasingly aligned with long-term trends in sustainability, electrification and advanced manufacturing.
